Asswiller ( German Aßweiler ) is a French commune with 276 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It is located in Crooked Alsace on the edge of the Northern Vosges Natural Park .

geography

Asswiller borders the Drulingen in the southwest . Other neighboring communities are Durstel in the northwest, Tieffenbach in the north, Struth in the northeast, Petersbach in the east and Ottwiller in the south.

history

A bas-relief found here suggests a settlement in the Gallic-Roman period.

During the Palatinate War , the place was annexed by King Louis XIV and returned after the Peace of Ryswick .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Asswiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Zabern in the district of Lower Alsace .
