Ottwiller ( German Ottweiler ) is a French commune with 260 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

The municipality is located in Crooked Alsace and has a share in the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord biosphere reserve .

history

The village was first mentioned in 696 as Audonevillare , then Odonouilare (847), Dotenvilare (1120), and Ottveiller (1793). In 1793, the county of Saar Werden voted to join France. From 1871 to 1919 there was one after the defeat of France in the Franco-German War under the German name Ottweiler as part of the Empire State Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire .
