Lorentzen ( German Lorenzen ) is a French commune with 241 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

location

Lorentzen is located in Crooked Alsace on the Eichel seven kilometers from Sarre-Union and belongs to the canton of Ingwiller .

The neighboring communities in the canton of Ingwiller are Dehlingen in the north, Butten in the northeast, Domfessel in the west and Vœllerdingen in the northwest. In the southeast Lorentzen borders on Diemeringen , in the south on Mackwiller .

history

In the 14th century, the Counts of Saar Werden built the moated castle. At that time Lorentzen was a fiefdom of Kur-Trier . After Lorentzen fell to Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1745 , the castle served as the widow's seat of the Countesses of Nassau-Saarbrücken until 1793. From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Lorentzen belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Zabern district in the Lower Alsace district .

The place name is derived from Laurentius von Rom , whose attribute , the rust, can be found on the municipal coat of arms.
