Lupstein is a French commune with 794 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).
geography
Lupstein is nine kilometers southeast of Saverne and 26 kilometers northwest of Strasbourg . The Zorn , the Mossel and the Canal de la Marne au Rhin run in the municipality, west and north of the town center.
history
prehistory
During excavations in the municipality, fragments of clay pots from the Hallstatt period and Gallo-Roman traces of a villa rustica were found. The villa burned down in the 5th century. Their remains were discovered in 1911 when the mayor's office was being built. The wall paintings from the villa are now exhibited in the Musée archéologique de Strasbourg , the museum in Saverne has a copy.
middle Ages
The oldest surviving mention of Lupstein comes from 739.
In the two partitions of the Lichtenberg rule , which took place around 1330 and 1335, Lupstein is mentioned as part of the Büttelei Littenheim and part of the Lichtenberg rule. It is the part of the country of the "middle line", the descendants of Ludwig III. von Lichtenberg , assigned.
Modern times
In 1525 the place was burned down in the German Peasants' War (1524-1526) and later rebuilt.

Attractions
An ossuary from 1503, built by Swen Matheus, is in the cemetery at Saint-Quentin church. It was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1993. The Saint-Quentin church was rebuilt in 1503, preserving the medieval tower. In the 18th century, however, the church was destroyed and then rebuilt in 1783. The bell tower was built in 1862.
The four villages Bappenheim, Wundermutzheim, Schoetelsheim and Betz home lay in today's district of Lupstein and fell in the 14th or 15th century desolate . From Bappenheim only the poplar mill remained. A mention of Wundermutzheim from the 8th century has already been preserved. It was last mentioned in 1356. The only structural remains of the village are a fountain and the Sainte-Barbe chapel . The chapel was built in 1862 on the foundations of the old church in Wundermutzheim.
economy
The image of the community is shaped by pastures and fields. Important branches of business in Lupstein are feed production, arable farming, viticulture , fruit growing and the breeding of domestic cattle and domestic pigs. There is a carpentry business on site, which was founded in 1918.
