Georges Gougenheim

Georges Gougenheim (born July 20, 1900 in Paris , † July 29, 1972 in Les Sables-d'Olonne , Vendée ) was a French Romance scholar and linguist.

life and work

Gougenheim, who attended the Lycée Condorcet , was admitted to the Ecole Normale in 1920, passed the Agrégation in 1923 and was a high school teacher in Amiens from 1925 to 1929. In 1929 he defended his two habilitation theses Etude sur les périphrases verbales de la langue française (Paris 1929, 1971) and La langue populaire dans le premier quart du XIXe siècle d'après le Petit dictionnaire du Peuple, de JCLP Desgranges (1821) (Paris 1929 ). He was then Maître de conférences in Clermont-Ferrand . From 1935 to 1955 he held the chair for French language history in Strasbourg , interrupted by war and imprisonment in the German officers' camp, where he a. a. worked scientifically with Pierre-Maxime Schuhl. From 1955 until his retirement in 1968 he was a professor at the Sorbonne and since 1965 an officer of the Legion of Honor.

Gougenheim made a name for himself as a grammarian, phonologist, linguist, including speaking French, and as a lexicologist. He worked on the great post-war enterprise of the “Français Fondamental” and based on this he wrote a didactic dictionary.
