life and work

Sauvageot, who was in contact with Turkish and Greek as a child , went to Uppsala to study the Finno-Ugric languages as a student at the École Normale in October 1918 on the instructions of Antoine Meillet and from there to Finland from June to October 1919 (to Eemil Nestor Setälä ), finally to Hungary from 1923 to 1931, where he taught French at Loránd Eötvös University and studied Hungarian with Zoltán Gombocz (1877–1935) . In Paris he defended the two writings Recherches sur le vocabulaire des langues ouralo-altaïques (Budapest 1929) and L'Emploi de l'article en gotique (Paris 1929) and held the first chair at the Ecole nationale des langues orientales from 1931 to 1967 for Finno-Ugric languages in France. Between 1941 and 1943 the Vichy regime removed him from his chair, but had to reinstate him in February 1943 under pressure from the Finnish and Hungarian embassies. During his removal he was accepted into the Hungarian Institute and worked as a translator from Finnish and Hungarian. In 1979 he became an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was also a foreign member of the Finnish Academy. A lecture hall at Budapest's Loránd Eötvös University bears his name.

Beyond his area of expertise, Sauvageot made a name for himself in describing contemporary French and was involved in the important post-war enterprise of the “Français Fondamental”.
