The Arrondissement Thionville is an administrative unit of the Moselle department in the French region of Grand Est ( Lorraine until the end of 2015 ). The location of the sub-prefecture is the city of Thionville .
geography
The area of the Arrondissement Thionville has an area of 941.53 km². It covers the north-western area of the Moselle department with the Moselle as the central river. In the east it extends to the lowlands on the border with Saarland , in the north to the Luxembourg border. The area around Thionville and Hayange has long been the center of the Lorraine mining industry , even though it has lost its former importance. In the southeast, the Arrondissement Thionville borders on the Arrondissement Forbach-Boulay-Moselle , in the south on the Arrondissement Metz and in the west on the Arrondissement Briey in the Department of Meurthe-et-Moselle .
history
On January 1, 2015, the Thionville arrondissement was re-formed by the merger of the former Thionville-Est and Thionville-Ouest arrondissements .
