geography

The municipality of Angevillers is about ten kilometers northwest of Thionville and eight kilometers south of the border with Luxembourg at an altitude between 315 and 418 m above sea level. The municipality covers 8.71 km².

history

The first documentary mention goes back to the year 926, but there are traces of settlement that suggest a much earlier settlement (Roman coin finds, gravestones from the Merovingian period ). Arsweiler was part of the Duchy of Luxembourg in the Holy Roman Empire from the Middle Ages until the 17th century and essentially shared its history . In 1659 the place came to France as part of the reunion policy and the French place name Angevillers came into use. From 1871 to 1918 it belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . After the end of the First World War , the place fell again to France and has remained there since, with the exception of the time of the German occupation 1940-1944. During the Second World War, the Fuehrer's headquarters in Brunhilde was established in the municipality .
