The municipality of Fontoy lies on the border with the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , about 18 kilometers west of Thionville . The German / Luxembourg name is derived from the brook Fensch (German Fentsch), which flows through the place. The river Conroy runs in the west of the municipality .

history

The place goes back to an ancient Roman settlement and was first mentioned in 959 ( Fontes ). A castle was built there in the 12th century. It has belonged to France since 1643/48. On February 21, 1871, Fontoy was occupied by German troops and ceded by France to the German Empire in the Peace of Frankfurt . Fontoy was designated in 1873 as the seat of the canton, which was formed from the municipalities of the cantons Audun-le-Roman and Longwy, which had fallen to the German Empire in 1871. After the end of the First World War , the place fell back to France. During the Second World War Fontoy was occupied again by German troops (June 17, 1940), a German civil administration was established; on September 9, 1944, the place was occupied by the Allies.
