Hombourg-Budange (German Homburg-Bidingen ) is a French commune with 556 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

geography

The municipality of Hombourg-Budange is located on the Canner , about 15 kilometers southeast of Thionville on the trunk road to Saarlouis .

history

The place has belonged to France since 1697 and consists of the two districts of Hombourg and the southern village of Budange, which were merged around 1790.

After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the place came under the German Empire, where it remained until the First World War.

From 1811 to 1902 the neighboring village of Kédange was also part of it, during which time the municipality was called Hombourg-sur-Kaner ( Homburg-Kedingen ).

Attractions

The castle of the Lords of Kriechingen on a hill above Hombourg, built between 1536 and 1551 instead of a medieval castle, restored after a fire in 1552, with a baroque east wing from 1719. It is now owned by the Counts of Mortemart .

The breakpoint Hombourg-Budange is located on the railway line Völklingen-Thionville and at the largely disused railway line Merzig-Bettelainville .
