Neufchef (German Neunhäuser or Neunhausen , Lorraine Néngsen / Näinhaiser ) is a French commune with 2580 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Thionville , the canton of Algrange and the Val de Fensch municipal association .
geography
The community of Neufchef is twelve kilometers west of Thionville on the border with the Meurthe-et-Moselle department above the Fenschtal . The Conroy River runs along the western boundary of the municipality . The north, west and south of the municipality is part of the Forêt de Moyeuvre , a large contiguous forest area.
history
The name of the place is derived from the Latin nova casa (new house), the place itself was first mentioned in 1183 as Neufchiefs ; since 1766 it belongs to France. From 1871 to 1918 Neufchef belonged to the German Empire , the place name was changed to Neunhäuser before 1910 .
During the Second World War , the place was occupied by the Germans, who renamed it Neunhausen and on November 12, 1940, some of the residents were expelled . In the autumn of 1944 the Allies took Neufchef and the place came back to France.
Like the entire surrounding area, the community has a long mining tradition.

Culture and sights
The two parts of the Écomusée des mines de fer de Lorraine , the open-air iron ore mining museum of Lorraine, are located in Neufchef and Aumetz , 14 kilometers away . It opened in 1989. In addition to exhibits on the history of mining in Lorraine from 1820 to 1998 (when the last mine was closed), guided tours of the mine of 1000 meters in length are offered.
