Metzervisse (German Metzerwiese , 1940-44 Metzerwiesen , Lorraine Metzerwis ) is a French commune with 2,271 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It is the capital of the eponymous canton of Metzervisse .
geography
The municipality of Metzervisse is located in the valley of the Bibiche river , about ten kilometers southeast of Thionville , on the road to Bouzonville and Saarlouis .
history
The place was first mentioned as Wiehs in the 10th century .
Through the Peace of the Pyrenees , Thionville and the surrounding area were ceded by Luxembourg to France on November 7, 1659 .
After the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, the place became part of the new German Empire ( Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine ). After the First World War France attached again, his German place name was Frenchified and officially in Metzerwisse renamed. From February 1, 1971 to December 31, 1981, the neighboring town of Volstroff was incorporated.
