history

The place was first mentioned in 821 as Heingen .

In 1704 the officer's son and master blacksmith Jean-Martin de Wendel bought the Seigneurie von Hayingen. He, his family and his descendants dedicated themselves to mining , they opened up mines, and built iron works and steel works . Both locals and guest workers from Germany, Poland, Russia, Italy, Spain and North Africa were employed and well paid. The last person in this social industrial dynasty died around 1960.

In 1903 a seven-meter-high and six-tonne statue of the Virgin Mary was cast and placed on the highest hill, 300 meters above Hayange. It was the first cast metal product from the smelting furnace of Florange .

In 2013, the last furnace belonging to the ArcelorMittal company was shut down. Around 3,000 jobs were lost.

economy

From 1704 Hayange was shaped by the iron and steel industry. In the 1970s and 1980s, numerous businesses were shut down (→ steel crisis ). On October 3, 2011, the last blast furnace ("P6") in Lorraine at the Arcelor Mittal plant in Hayange was shut down despite protests. In Hayange there is also Sollac Lorraine and the Usine Saint Jacques railroad factory . The latter belonged to Tata Steel from 2007 to June 1, 2016 . Tata modernized the factory in 2010/11.

politics

The often difficult structural change in the city and the region, which meant unemployment and a lack of prospects for many residents, made the former stronghold of the labor movement into a stronghold of the Front national . Since the local elections in 2014, Hayange has been one of the municipalities in which this party provides the mayor.

Fabien Engelmann , former trade unionist of the communist CGT , has repeatedly caused a sensation with controversial actions, for example by organizing a fête du cochon that focused on the “French tradition” of eating pork and was interpreted as a deliberate provocation of the Muslim community , or politically unpopular organizations like the Secours populaire made work in the community more difficult. Since he, his party colleagues and city employees are increasingly concerned with safety, cleanliness and the elderly, a majority of citizens are satisfied with his policies, as state opinion polls have shown.

Twin cities

There are town partnerships with Arlon in Belgium, Barga in Italy and Diekirch in Luxembourg.
