geography

Knutange is located on the Fensch , about twelve kilometers southwest of Thionville at an altitude between 196 and 366 m above sea level. The municipal area covers 2.43 km².

The municipality's landmark is the 260-meter-long railway bridge over the Fenschtal ( Viaduc de Knutange ) on the Lille- Thionville railway line .

history

Knutange was first mentioned in 1193 as Cneutengis and is named after a Frankish landowner named Knuto. The place came to France in 1659.

The municipality has a long industrial history. The Kneuttingen ironworks ("Fentscher Hütten-A.-G. Kneuttingen") was in operation from 1895 to the 1970s. It had a 145 m long Gichtseilbahn built by Adolf Bleichert & Co. , which had two angular stations rotating through 360 ° as a special feature, because the Möller places or ore hulls were located close to the blast furnaces.
