history
On March 4, 1790, with the founding of the Bas-Rhin department, today's area of the arrondissement was assigned to the "districts" of Strasbourg and Schlettstadt. With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, it was integrated into the new arrondissements of Strasbourg, Barr (from February 10, 1806 Schlettstadt) and Saint-Dié in the Vosges department.
Since May 18, 1871, the area was set up for the first time as the district of Molsheim in the Lower Rhine district in the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . At that time the district covered 740 km² and in 1885 had 69,328 inhabitants.
The arrondissement was founded in the course of the reintegration of Alsace into France on June 28, 1919 ( Treaty of Versailles ).
On January 1, 2015, the department was enlarged by the municipalities of the Arrondissement Saverne and the municipality of Duppigheim of the dissolved Arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne .
