Grandfontaine (German Michelbrunn ) is a French commune with 396 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). In the local Alsatian German the place is called "Grossbrun".
geography
The municipality is located west northwest of Schirmeck in the Vosges and borders in the north on the Moselle department and in the west on the Vosges and Meurthe-et-Moselle departments . In the east and south-east, the municipality shares borders with the municipalities of Wisches , Schirmeck and La Broque . Grandfontaine is a large commune in the canton of Mutzig and includes, in addition to the main settlement, the districts of Haut-Fourneau, les Minières, Framont, Haut-Donon and Bas-Donon. The highest point is the Donon at 1008 m. ü. M., followed by the Tête des Blanches Roches at 916 m, the Corbeille at 899 m, the Maxe at 863 m, the Rond Perthuis at 849 m, the Tête Mathis at 838 m and the Haut de la Charaille at 758 m. The municipality of Raon-lès-Leau is still claiming back a 1000 hectare forest area from Grandfontaine, which Bismarck had given Germany in 1871 in order to control the strategically important Donon .
The winding D392 runs through the village, which connects Schirmeck with the Col du Donon and has already been part of the Tour de France several times .
