The French commune Bœrsch (German Börsch ) with 2437 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located in the Vosges between the communes of Obernai and Rosheim in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

Part of the village of Klingenthal belongs to the wine-growing community on the Alsace Wine Route , about 30 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg .

history

Bœrsch is first mentioned as Bersa in 1109 on the occasion of the founding of the St. Leonhard Abbey, a Benedictine abbey that existed until the French Revolution . In 1340 Berthold, the II. , Bishop of Strasbourg elevated the place to a city, which he had fortified. During the Thirty Years War , Bœrsch was occupied by the Swedes and then destroyed. In 1830, an existing armory in the hamlet of Klingenthal was closed.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bœrsch belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Molsheim district in the Lower Alsace district .

In Bœrsch there are several buildings and objects that are classified as Monument historique and are therefore under monument protection. Notable among others are:

  • The Renaissance town hall from the 16th century
  • The 18th century church of Saint-Médard with a 12th century tower
  • A six-bucket fountain from 1617 near the town hall, typical of Alsace

Personalities

The Alsatian artist Charles Spindler (1865–1938) was born in Bœrsch and has close ties to the place through his studio in Leonardsau , which he set up in 1897 , where he also died.
