It is located in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). The community is a member of the Communauté de communes de la Région de Molsheim-Mutzig . It used to be home to one of the largest breweries in Alsace, the Brasserie Mutzig . In addition, the community was once the location of a German (6500 soldiers), today a French garrison (approx. 1000 soldiers).

geography

The municipality of Mutzig is located on the Bruche , which enters the Upper Rhine Plain from the Vosges . The village of Hermolsheim also belongs to Mutzig . The distance to Strasbourg to the east is 30 km.

Neighboring communities are Molsheim , Dorlisheim , Rosenwiller , Gresswiller , Dinsheim-sur-Bruche , Dangolsheim and Soultz-les-Bains .

history

Mutzig was founded in the 13th century by King Rudolf von Habsburg . In 1308 it came to the Bishop of Strasbourg . In 1444 the city resisted the Armagnacs . In 1454 it was taken by the Count of Zweibrücken and later liberated by the Strasbourgers.

After France had to cede Alsace to Germany again in 1871, the German military saw Mutzig as an important position to hinder a possible French attack on Molsheim and Strasbourg . The Kaiser Wilhelm II fortress was built between 1893 and 1916 for this purpose . On August 18, 1914 at around 4 p.m., the Mutziger fortress opened fire against French shock troops who had advanced as far as the Breuschtal . A total of 291 shots were fired. The French received orders to retreat, leaving Alsace outside the combat zones.

Attractions

  • The lower gate (Porte de Strasbourg) with a representation of Saint Mauritius from the end of the 14th century is the last remnant of the medieval fortifications and is a listed monument as a monument historique .
  • The town hall , known as the Hôtel de ville or Mairie , built in 1746, is a classical building with an onion-shaped bell tower; in this there is a clock with a Jacobin head and a Phrygian cap above the dial; at the strike of the hour he sticks out his tongue and wiggles his ears. In Mutzig, this wooden figure is also called 'Rothüssmann'.
  • The fountain square , Place de Fontaine. Originally the square was decorated with a Renaissance fountain (1667). The column shaft is richly decorated with plant motifs and is a copy. The original is kept in the city museum.
  • The Church of St. Mauritius . The tower of the imposing neo-Gothic building (1879) is 72 meters high, the highest church tower in the Bruche valley. The lavish neo-Gothic interior is protected as a monument ( Monument historique ).

  • Castle of the Rohan
The Château des Rohans is a Baroque palace from the 17th century, which was built on the site of a previous building from the 13th century that was destroyed by the Swedes in the Thirty Years War . Less known than its neighbors, the Rohan Castle in Saverne and the Palais Rohan in Strasbourg, it served the four prince-bishops and later cardinals of the Rohan family for 86 years (1704–1790) . The castle was originally built as the residence of Bishop Franz Egon von Fürstenberg and moved into in 1673. After the French Revolution , the castle was looted, expropriated and bought by the Coulaux brothers in 1799. From April 20, 1801 to 1870 ( Franco-German War ) the castle served as a weapons factory. This is where the famous Chassepot rifles were made. Today the castle houses the city museum (with a large collection of rifles) and various cultural institutions.
  • On the northern mountain in the immediate vicinity of Mutzig, the Prussian War Ministry built the then largest fortress with 254 hectares called Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II. (Today: Fort de Mutzig ) from 1893 to 1916 . With it, new technical solutions were introduced: concrete, armored turrets and electricity.
The fortress provided space for around 6,500 men in around 40,000 m² of bombproof works . Parts of the facility can be visited. For more information, see The Fortress Today .
  • The Maginot Line ran north of Mutzig, the fortifications of which were taken and crossed by the 45th Infantry Division of the US Army in November 1944 after little resistance from the German Wehrmacht . Parts of these systems can be viewed.

In 1989 the location was closed; the annual production was at last around 600,000 hl. In Schiltigheim , beer is still brewed under the Mutzig brand . The historic brewery building of the Mützig brewery was converted into an apartment hotel.
