Niederhaslach is a French commune with 1,405 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges Mountains in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region ( Alsace until 2015 ). Niederhaslach is one of the border towns of the Alemannic dialect area and is in the immediate vicinity of Oberhaslach . The Hasel flows through Niederhaslach and flows into the Ill via the Bruche near Strasbourg .

Saint Florentinus ( Florentius of Strasbourg ) with crosier and miter on a blue background. Also namesake of the Niederhaslach collegiate church , called Église Saint-Florent , and namesake of the St. Florent pilgrimage chapel in neighboring Oberhaslach.

Saint Florent Church

Niederhaslach Collegiate Church , called Église Saint-Florent . The three-aisled church building is one of the most representative Gothic sacred buildings in Alsace , along with the Strasbourg Cathedral . Particularly noteworthy are the 14 impressive medieval stained glass windows , but also newer elements, such as the imposing tower tower from the 19th century, shape the image of this majestic church.

Personalities

  • Florentius of Strasbourg founded the Benedictine monastery in Niederhaslach in the 6th or 7th century.
  • Gerald von Steinbach († 1330 in Niederhaslach, had an accident). He was one of three sons of the stonemason Erwin von Steinbach (1244-1318). Erwin's father was the main architect of the Strasbourg cathedral . His architecture was praised by Goethe in 1773. Son Gerhald was the builder of the Niederhaslach collegiate church . His accidental death initially led to the construction freeze. The construction was not completed until 1335. The grave slab of Gerald von Steinbach is still inside the Niederhaslach collegiate church.
  • Johannes Burckard (* 1450 Niederhaslach, † 15 May 1506 Rome ) was protonotary of the Holy See and from 1484 to 1503 master of ceremonies at the Roman Curia
