The three-aisled collegiate church of St. Florentius (French Collégiale Saint-Florent , today Parish Church St. Johannes Baptista , French Église Saint-Jean Baptiste ) of Niederhaslach in the Bas-Rhin department is considered one of the most important Gothic sacred buildings in Alsace .

Building history

Longhouse
Tympanum above the main portal

The church, formerly dedicated to St. Florentius , was built in 1274 on the place of a destroyed previous building from the early 7th century, which since 810, according to the determination of the Strasbourg bishop Rachio, served as a shrine for the relics of its founding saint . The construction of the new building took place until 1385, a devastating fire on June 4, 1287, which left only the choir intact, and the accidental death of the architect Gerlach von Steinbach (son of Erwin von Steinbach ) in 1330 delayed completion. During the Peasants 'War in 1525, the church was looted and on June 6, 1633, during the Thirty Years' War, Swedish soldiers set fire to it. The building, neglected or misused in the course of the next centuries (in 1744 it served as a slaughterhouse), was only restored to its original splendor in the course of extensive restoration measures from 1853 to 1887. From 1990 to 2006 another general overhaul took place.

Furnishing

Leaded glass window

The Niederhaslach collegiate church has the largest number of originally preserved medieval stained glass windows in all of Alsace after the Strasbourg cathedral . The nave and choir have numerous complete panels from the 13th and 14th centuries, which are impressive for the luminosity of their red and blue tones and their wealth of figures. The life of Jesus and Mary as well as John the Baptist are depicted. The most famous because it is the most original window is the Anabaptist window with the depiction of St. John's Sermon, which takes place in a huge central medallion with a life-size and extremely plastic main figure. The facade is pierced by a rose window from 1325, which was also originally preserved .
