Wangen is a French commune in the department of Bas-Rhin in the region Grand Est (2015 Alsace ). It is located at the northern end of the Alsace Wine Route , with viticulture in Alsace only ending 40 kilometers north on the border with Germany.
history
First mentioned in a document in 722, Wangen is off the main traffic arteries. Until the 17th century, the village was protected by a 15 meter wide and 6 meter deep moat, access was only possible via the “Niedertor” or the “Motscheltor” (demolished in 1887). The department road D 422 connects the municipality with the canton capital Wasselonne or Marlenheim in the north and with Molsheim in the south. The 235 bus also runs in both directions. The railway connection to Molsheim and Saverne was closed in 1967, and the route now serves as a cycle path.

Attractions
A medieval city fortification with two towers has been preserved. The Niedertor , the Sommertor and the Motcheltor are particularly striking . The medieval castle of the Lords of Wangen , an octagonal central building, was demolished in 1750.
