Antoine Alphonse Chassepot (born March 4, 1833 in Mutzig , France , † February 5, 1905 in Gagny , France) was a French inventor .

Antoine Alphonse Chassepot was a worker in the Saint-Thomas arms factory in Paris . In 1858 he became a civil servant there and in 1863 presented the French War Ministry with a model of a rear- loading rifle , initially with a percussion fuse , without a unit cartridge , and later a replica of a needle gun by Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse with a unit cartridge . Only after the success of the Prussian needle rifle in 1866 had demonstrated the superiority of the breech-loading rifle , his Chassepot rifle was introduced as a weapon for the French infantry and light cavalry under the official name fusil modèle in 1866 . Until 1870, the rifles were manufactured in the arms factory in the former prince-bishop's palace, the Château des Rohan , in his hometown.

Antoine Alphonse Chassepot was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor , plus 30,000 francs in prize money.
