Location of Gagny in the greater Paris area

The French city ​​of Gagny is an eastern suburb of Paris with 39,358 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It belongs to the Seine-Saint-Denis department and borders the Seine-et-Marne department to the east . Gagny extends for 3.3 kilometers from north to south and 4.4 kilometers from east to west.

Gagny is surrounded by seven towns: Villemomble and Le Raincy in the west, Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois in the north, Neuilly-sur-Marne and Gournay-sur-Marne in the south and Chelles in the east. The inhabitants of the city call themselves Gabiniens .

history

The name of the city is derived from Gannius, who was the owner of the area in Roman times. In the 11th century, Adèle de Champagne founded a monastery. In the 13th century the city was under the feudal rule of Etienne de Gagny, husband of Béatrice of Montfermeil.

The French Revolution took a violent turn there. After the church was no longer used, it was turned into a temple of reason (French: Temple da la Raison ). In 1814/15 Gagny was occupied by Allied troops and in 1870 it was under Prussian occupation.

This is also where the episode of the Taxis de la Marne took place. During the First World War, the confiscated were in the night of 6 September 7, 1914 the town hall of Gagny Renault taxis together to from here 6000 recruits and reservists to the front near Nanteuil-le-Haudouin to promote where the German attack was repulsed. This act of desperation resulted in a total of 70,000 francs in travel expenses on the meter.

The war memorial was erected in 1920.
