Alberto Aquilani (born July 7, 1984 in Rome ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .
Career
In the club
Alberto Aquilani comes from the youth of AS Roma, where he was significantly influenced by Bruno Conti . He made his debut in the first team on May 10, 2003 against Torino Calcio . In the 2003/04 season he played on loan at US Triestina in Serie B . After his return to Roma , Aquilani became a regular in midfield and was three times Italian runner-up and twice Coppa Italia winner with the club .
In August 2009 Aquilani moved to the English Premier League club Liverpool FC for a transfer fee of 20 million euros . On March 15, 2010, he scored his first goal in the Premier League against Portsmouth FC . In the semi-final second leg of the UEFA Europa League against Atlético Madrid he scored the 1-0 and thus enabled an extension; Liverpool FC was eliminated.
After Aquilani in Liverpool had not met the expectations of replacing the top performer Xabi Alonso who had migrated to Real Madrid , he moved to Juventus on August 21, 2010 on loan for one season . During the 2011 summer break, he went to AC Milan . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2014, but was initially loaned for one season. Aquilani played his first game on the 2nd matchday of the season on September 9, 2011 in a 2-2 draw against Lazio . He scored his first goal for Milan on Matchday 3 to make it 1-0 in the 3-1 defeat against SSC Napoli .
For the 2012/13 season Aquilani moved to Fiorentina . He signed a three-year deal until June 30, 2015. In August 2015 Aquilani went to Sporting Lisbon for free , for whom he scored three goals in 19 games in his first season. In August 2016 he moved to the Italian promoted team Delfino Pescara 1936 . In January 2017, the league competitor US Sassuolo Calcio was awarded.
In the summer of 2017, Aquilani moved to UD Las Palmas , where he signed a two-year contract. After Las Palmas was relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season, the Aquilani contract was also terminated. On June 28, 2019, he announced the end of his career after being without a club for a season.
In the national team
Alberto Aquilani played in the Italian youth national teams since the U-15 and completed a total of 65 junior internationals for the Italian association. In 2003 he became European champion with the Italian U-19 selection in Liechtenstein .
After the 2006 World Cup , Aquilani was appointed to the senior national team for the first time by Roberto Donadoni . He made his debut on November 15, 2006 in a 1-1 draw against Turkey . He was also part of Italy's squad for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland , where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against eventual European champions Spain on penalties .
After Aquilani missed the 2010 World Cup and the Euro 2012 , although he was a regular member of the Squadra Azzurra , he took part in the 2013 Confed Cup and the 2014 World Cup. On November 18, 2014, he played his last international match against Albania .
