A total of 72 clubs took part in the 59th edition of the most important Italian cup competition. The complete Serie A with 20 teams and the complete Serie B with 22 clubs were represented. There were also 28 teams from Serie C and two clubs from the amateur leagues. All games in the first rounds took place according to the knockout system . The club from the lower league always received the home advantage.
