Philippe Mexès (born March 30, 1982 in Toulouse ) is a former French football player .

Career

Toulouse

For the young Philippe Mexès, football was the only way to spend his free time, so he joined the local football club Toulouse-Mirail, where he began his footballing career. Before he was discovered by the talent scouts of AJ Auxerre and moved to Burgundy at the age of 16 , he was shaped in the youth department of Toulouse FC for seven years. His first success with Auxerre was winning the amateur championship in spring 1999.

AJ Auxerre

Shortly afterwards he came to the professional team Auxerres and made his debut on November 10, 1999 in Ligue 1 , on December 8, 1999 he was able to achieve his first competitive goal. Mexès attracted more and more attention, and France Football magazine named him Hope of the Year . He became a key player in Auxerre's central defense, the European top clubs noticed him; for example, Manchester United offered him a transfer fee of 20 million euros.

But he remained loyal to Auxerre and made a significant contribution to qualifying for the Champions League in the 2002/03 season, which finally helped him to become known throughout Europe. At the end of the same season, Mexès held the Coupe de France in the sky - Auxerre defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 on May 31, 2003 .

AS Roma

After he signed with AS Roma for the 2004/05 season , he received a six-week ban from FIFA because he still had a valid contract with Auxerre. AJ Auxerre and AS Roma could not agree on the transfer fee for Mexès; Ultimately, FIFA set it at seven million euros and imposed a transfer ban on the Romans for the 2005/06 season, stating that they cannot sign any players.

AC Milan

For the 2011/12 season Mexès moved to champions AC Milan on a free transfer .

National team

Philippe Mexès has played for all of France's youth teams, so he can also point to success in this area. In 2000 he became U-18 European champion , and two years later he and his team reached the final of the U-21 European championship , which the team of the Czech Republic won on penalties. He was the youngest of these French U-21s , which consisted of well-known talent, u. a. Jean-Alain Boumsong , Djibril Cissé , Olivier Kapo , Julien Escudé , Sidney Govou , Benoît Pedretti and Anthony Réveillère .

On October 16, 2002, Mexès made his debut for France's senior team at the age of 20. The opponent in this qualifier for Euro 2004 was Malta . Mexès came on for Lilian Thuram in the 85th minute and France won 4-0. In 2003 Mexès was part of the French team that won the Confederations Cup with a final victory over Cameroon , and he played several times from the start. But at the European Championship, which took place a year later, he was not nominated by coach Jacques Santini . The non-nomination for the next major tournament was somewhat more surprising. Despite an optimal season at club level with consistently good performances, he was denied participation in the 2006 World Cup .

By early June 2010, Mexès had played 13 games for France's senior team , six under Santini and seven under Raymond Domenech . He was called up numerous times, but was not used due to injuries or tactical decisions by the coach. This changed when the new Sélectionneur Laurent Blanc took office , who trusted a new pair of central defenders in his first eight meetings with Mexès and the young Adil Rami . After surviving an injury and almost eleven months away from the Bleus , Mexès returned at the end of February 2012 and was also part of Blanc's 2012 European Championship squad . He was also used there in the group games.
