After a season he moved to the league competitor Independiente , where he stayed until 1998.
Career in Spain, France and Turkey
For the 1998/99 season he moved to the Spanish first division club Real Saragossa . After another year in the goal of Independiente Mondragón went in July 2000 in the French Ligue 1 for FC Metz . Although relegation was barely prevented and he himself was awarded the Étoile d'Or , Mondragón had to leave the club after a year. He then played for Galatasaray Istanbul for six years , becoming Turkish champions in 2002 and 2006 and cup winners in 2005.
1. FC Cologne
In July 2007, Mondragón moved to 1. FC Cologne , who was playing in the second division at that time . There he received a two-year contract with the option for a further year and wore the shirt number 1. With FC he rose to the Bundesliga in 2008 and was the first South American goalkeeper in the German premier league. In the 2010/11 season , Mondragón was the oldest active football player in the Bundesliga. He replaced Jens Lehmann , who had ended his career at the end of the previous season.
Due to a trip to two friendly matches with the Colombian national team, Mondragón lost his regular place in the Kölner Tor in October 2010. In December 2010, his contract was terminated.
Philadelphia Union and return to Colombia
The goalkeeper moved to the North American Major League Soccer . In January 2011, Mondragón signed a contract with the Philadelphia Union . He replaced Danny Califf as team captain .
On January 30, 2012, he moved to Deportivo Cali .
National team
In the national team , Mondragón was long overshadowed by Óscar Córdoba . He was already on the bench at the 1994 World Cup in the USA . He played at the 1998 World Cup in France , but dropped out with Colombia after the preliminary round. Subsequently, Colombia missed both the 2002 World Cup and qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In October 2009 he refused a comeback in the national team because he wanted to concentrate on 1. FC Köln. His national team career seemed to be over for good.
At the age of 39, Mondragón was called up again for two test matches in the national team. In the game against Ecuador (October 8, 2010) and the USA (October 12, 2010) he was supposed to represent the injured goalkeeper David Ospina . However, Ospina was in goal again in the first test match. In the game against the United States, however, Mondragón played from the start. After good performances for Deportivo Cali, he was called up on August 10, 2012 at the age of 41 for the international match against Uruguay on September 7, 2012 . In 2014 national coach José Pekerman nominated him for the Colombia squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . On June 24, 2014, he came on for David Ospina in the World Cup game against Japan five minutes before the final whistle; at 43 years and 3 days, he became the oldest player to have played in a World Cup final. At the 2018 World Cup , he was replaced by the Egyptian Essam El-Hadary (45 years and 161 days).
On July 5, 2014, Mondragón resigned from the national team and ended his active career.
various
In February 2010, Mondragón was appointed ambassador for the Cologne non-profit association KIDsmiling , whose social soccer project “Come Bolzen!” He supported.
He has been involved in various scandals during his career, including an affair involving forged passports during his time at FC Metz . Mondragón and four other South American players from different clubs had played games with false European passports, thus circumventing the foreigner regulation. After a game in the intermediate round of the UEFA Champions League between AS Roma and Galatasaray, a fight broke out between the Italian and Turkish players, police officers and fans; in this context, Mondragón was also investigated.
After the end of his active career, he works internationally as a motivational coach and gives lectures for companies.
