International Commission for the Protection of the Elbe
The International Commission for the Protection of the Elbe (short: IKSE) was founded on October 8, 1990 in Magdeburg . The basis for the creation of the IKSE was the “Agreement on the International Commission for the Protection of the Elbe ” signed on the same day .
Contracting parties
The contracting parties are:
- the Federal Republic of Germany
- the Czech Republic
- the European Union (only until April 30, 2004)
The EU was only a contractual partner of the IKSE until the Czech Republic joined the EU (May 1, 2004).
aims
- to enable the uses, especially the extraction of drinking water from bank filtrate and the agricultural use of the water and sediments,
- to achieve an ecosystem as close to nature as possible with a healthy biodiversity and
- to sustainably reduce the pollution of the North Sea from the Elbe catchment area.
To achieve these goals is
- an improvement of the condition of the Elbe and its main tributaries in physical, chemical and biological terms in the components water , suspended matter , sediment and organisms as well
- increasing the ecological value of the Elbe valley is a priority.

- ↑ This commission should not be confused with the International Elbe Commission founded by the Versailles Treaty (seat: Dresden, International Commission of the Elbe), which oversaw the internationalization of Elbe shipping. It had ten members, two for Czechoslovakia and one each for Anhalt , Belgium , France , Hamburg , Italy , Prussia , Saxony and the United Kingdom . For the maintenance of navigability, however, only the here u. a. enumerated neighboring states responsible. Cf .: The big Brockhaus.
