The Cathedral of Santiago del Estero or the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel ( Spanish Catedral Basílica Nuestra Señora del Carmen ) is a Roman Catholic church in Santiago del Estero , capital of the province of the same name and seat of the diocese of the same name in northern Argentina . The cathedral with the Patronage of Our Lady on Mount Carmel has the titles of a minor basilica and a national historical monument .

history

The first church in the city is believed to have been built in the reign of Philip II around 1565; the location is unclear. With the creation of the first diocese in what is now Argentina by Pope Pius V on May 14, 1570, the church was elevated to a cathedral with the arrival of Francisco de Victoria in 1581. The second of now five buildings was completed in 1612, but burned down in 1615. The third building could already be consecrated on January 30th, 1617, this was devastated by a flood in 1627. The fourth cathedral was built at the current location by 1686. In 1817 an earthquake shattered it along with the city. On January 13, 1877, today's cathedral was the fifth in the city to be completed and consecrated. The work on the classical church with two bell towers was carried out by Agustín and Nicolás Cánepa on behalf of the governor Don Manuel Taboada, who was buried in the cathedral. It was declared a National Historic Monument by Decree No. 13723 of July 28, 1953. In 1971 Pope Paul VI awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica.

Furnishing

The picture in front of the main altar was donated by Luis Frías in 1942 and comes from Lima . Other elements worth mentioning are the image of the Apostle James the Elder , the Onyx Altar of the Blessed Sacrament and the Altar Santiagueño, which contains replicas of the Lord of Mailin, Our Lady of Consolation of Sumampa and the local Cruz de Matara. The organ comes from the German manufacturer EF Walcker & Cie. Ludwigsburg from 1931.

The remains of Bishops Yañez and Weimann and the vicar capitular Monsignor Francisco Dubrovich, who disappeared in 1971, are also buried in the church.
