history

Estudiantes de Mérida was founded on April 4th, 1971. The club was classified in the second Venezuelan football league and was able to win the Copa Venezuela, the country's national cup, in its first season, in 1971. Anzoátegui FC could be defeated in the final. Two years later, the club, which was now playing first class, was again in the cup final, but this time they lost to Portuguesa FC . After the cup was not played in 1974, Estudiantes de Mérida secured the second cup victory in 1975 by a final victory against Deportivo San Cristóbal. Overall, the club was able to win the Copa Venezuela three times, a third success came in 1985.

In the 1980 season, Estudiantes de Mérida was able to win the Venezuelan football championship for the first time. In the Primera División a first rank was achieved before Portuguesa FC. In the following season they finished second for the fourth time after 1975, 1976 and 1977, this time Deportivo Táchira FC became champions . Estudiantes de Mérida achieved their second and to this day last championship triumph in 1985 when they finished first in front of Deportivo Táchira FC. After that, the club was not yet again champion, with three more runner-up championships were recorded. Estudiantes de Mérida currently plays in the first Venezuelan football league, and they are currently mostly in the midfield of the table.

Estudiantes de Mérida took part in the Copa Libertadores , the most important football competition for club teams in South America, seven times . The first participation dates from 1977 , when Estudiantes de Mérida was eliminated in the group stage in a group with league rivals Portuguesa FC and the Peruvian teams Unión Huaral and Sport Boys . Even in four other participations, they were eliminated from the tournament after the preliminary round. At the Copa Libertadores 1999 Estudiantes de Mérida caused a surprise when they first prevailed in the qualifying round and qualified for the tournament and then finished the group stage in second behind Nacional Montevideo and ahead of CA Bella Vista and CF Monterrey . In the last sixteen they met the Ecuadorian team from Emelec Guayaquil and surprisingly eliminated them with a 3-1 and 0-1 win. In the quarter-finals, the club caused a bang again when last year's semi- finalist Club Cerro Porteño from Paraguay was defeated 3-0 in Mérida. With a 4-0 defeat in the second leg in Asunción , however, Cerro Porteño moved into the semi-finals, where the Paraguayan club finally failed to Deportivo Cali . Four years later, in 2003 , Estudiantes de Mérida took part in the Copa Libertadores for the last time, but they didn't even qualify.
