Carlos Ariel Borges , according to other sources Carlos Luis Borges (born January 14, 1932 , † February 5, 2014 in Montevideo ), was a Uruguayan football player .

society

"Lucho" Borges, who came from the youth department of Club Atlético Peñarol , played a total of 15 seasons, 14 of them in a row in the period from 1946 to 1960, in Montevideo with the Aurinegros in the Primera División . During his time at Peñarol, the left winger won the Uruguayan championship in 1949, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1958, 1959 and 1960 and the Copa Campeones de América , the forerunner of the Copa Libertadores, in 1960 . Borges was on April 19, 1960 in the encounter against the Bolivian club Jorge Wilstermann in the Estadio Centenario, the first ever goal scorer in this newly introduced competition. He then moved to Argentina, where he was in the ranks of the Racing Club de Avellaneda from 1961 to 1963 . There he won the Argentine championship title for his club in 1961. In 1963 he returned to Peñarol. In 1964 he joined the Platense, which competed in the Primera B Zona Norte .

National team

In 35 international matches between May 23, 1954 and April 2, 1959, he scored ten goals for Uruguay . In 1956 he took part in the Campeonato Sudamericano with the Celeste and became South American champion. Borges played his only World Cup tournament in Switzerland in 1954 . He managed a hat trick in the 7-0 win against Scotland .

Others

On July 10, 1963, Borges was on board the ship (Vapor de la Carrera) "Ciudad de Asunción", which ran between Buenos Aires and Montevideo and sank that day. He survived the accident by clinging to a piece of wooden furniture for several hours and also saved a seven-year-old child.
