Gonçalves was used in both finals in midfield of the Peñarol team, which had other famous players of the time such as goalkeeper Luis Maidana , defender and world champion of 1950 , William Martínez and striker Luis Cubilla in their ranks. 1961 Peñarol was again in the final of the Libertadores Cup, Néstor Gonçalves missed the finals due to an injury.
