history
The first settlement of the place, originally called Isla Cabellos, took place at the beginning of the 19th century. The first settlers were mainly Creoles and Blandengues soldiers, later those of Italian, Russian and German origins were added. On November 1, 1932, the town was granted Pueblo status by law No. 8.907 . In the 1940s, the local infrastructure grew with the opening of a clinic ( Policlínica ) and a branch of the Banco República and the establishment of a post office. At that time, the place was also connected to the electricity and water supply and the telephone network. The city was later given its current name in honor of the former President of Uruguay of the same name, Baltasar Brum . In the 1980s, rice began to be grown in the Baltasar Brum area.
