List of football matches between Club Atlético Peñarol and Club Nacional de Football
The list of football matches between Club Atlético Peñarol and Club Nacional de Football includes all the mandatory and friendly matches between the first men's teams of Uruguay 's two most successful football clubs , Club Atlético Peñarol and Club Nacional de Football . Like the vast majority of other Uruguayan football clubs, both are based in the state capital, Montevideo .
Since the beginning of the 20th century, there has been a very strong rivalry between the two clubs, whose supporters traditionally split the country and whose games (known as Clásicos ) have immense social significance. It is the oldest football derby outside of the United Kingdom and on the American continent is only comparable in importance to the Argentine Superclásicos between CA Boca Juniors and CA River Plate .
The CA Peñarol emerged from the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC), the sports club founded in 1891 for the workers and employees of the British railway company Central Uruguay Railway in Montevideo. It has its roots in the factory workforce, which mostly consisted of English immigrants - a fact that applies to many South American and especially Uruguayan football clubs in the late 19th century. Nacional, on the other hand - like the Albion Football Club - emphasized the national identity in its statutes from the start, was the first Creole club in Latin America and the first football club in Uruguay that was not founded or run by the British. The most striking and permanent point of friction between the two clubs, especially between their supporters, is the question of Uruguay's oldest football club. The Club Nacional de Football, founded in 1899, claims this title for itself and argues that CA Peñarol was only founded in 1913 as an independent football club and could not be regarded as the successor to the CURCC, since it was dissolved. CURCC existed eight years before Nacional. However, through the legitimation of the Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol and the Uruguayan government, Peñarol is officially considered the legitimate CURCC successor in a line and thus the oldest football club in the country. Note: The Albion Football Club was founded in 1891 just under four months before the CURCC, but is often not taken into account in this question, as the team now only plays in the third division.
Since the first meeting of the two clubs in the summer of 1900, a total of 518 games have been played in a wide variety of competitions - the majority of them in the amateur league and the Primera División Profesional, which emerged in 1932. Although five games are usually included in the overall list, they are not included in the results statistics due to abandonment or their provisional nature. In addition, there were three matches that were decided at the green table because the opponent did not start.
Overview of the games
