The Estadio Contador José Pedro Damiani is a football stadium in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo . It was inaugurated on April 19, 1916 as the home ground of the successful club Peñarol Montevideo under the name Las Acacias ( German Die Akazien ). This name is still in use today.
history
The club acquired the site for the stadium construction in 1913. The opening game for the club's 25th anniversary was a Clásico against city rivals Nacional and was won 3-1 by Peñarol. In 1930 the entrance area and the VIP stands were dismantled and installed in the Estadio Pocitos for the first soccer World Cup . At the end of the tournament, the components were returned to their original location.
In 1997, the stadium was extensively refurbished, equivalent to a new building. Due to safety concerns, the insufficient number of 12,000 spectators and poor infrastructure, only the amateurs of Peñarol Montevideo games are played in the sports facility, while the professionals compete in the Estadio Centenario . The last top division game was dated August 1997 and was against Rampla Juniors FC . Las Acacias bear their new name in memory of José Pedro Damiani (* 1921; † 2007), who headed the club from 1987 to 1990 and from 1993 to 2007.
