Residential building Katharinenstrasse 1
The residential building Katharinenstrasse 1 is a listed Art Nouveau building in the Outer Neustadt of Dresden , which was built in 1903 according to plans by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm Hertzsch and which belonged to the architect. It was built together with the houses at Katharinenstrasse 3 and Katharinenstrasse 5 by the same architect.
It is characterized by its building sculpture, which is one of the "most elaborate of Dresden Art Nouveau".
description
The building was erected as a four-storey residential building within a closed development that is now partially destroyed by the war. The facade has a front length that is seven axes wide. Particularly noteworthy is the ground floor, which is characterized by an elaborate sculptural work in sandstone . The motif of the woman's head calling out from a forest of leaves can be found in a modified version on several Dresden buildings. For example at the house at Bundschuhstrasse 5 in Johannstadt, which was also built in 1903. This motif was probably used for the first time in 1897 above the portal of the house at König-Albert-Straße 29 (today Albertstraße ; the house was destroyed in the war). It was a work by the Dresden sculptor Ernst Jungbluth . The authorship is unclear.
The upper floors show a rich plastic ornament in plaster and stucco.
