Martin Behaim monument in Nuremberg

The Martin Behaim monument stands in Nuremberg on Theresienplatz and commemorates Martin Behaim , the creator of the oldest surviving globe .

Christoph Lenz cast the memorial based on a design by the sculptor Johann Wolfgang Rößner . The unveiling took place on September 17, 1890.

The larger than life bronze figure standing on a pedestal touches Martin Behaim's potato with his right hand . The two bronze female figures seated a little lower to the right and left symbolize trade and science , i.e. the two areas of Behaim's activity.
