Estadio Pocitos in 1930

The Estadio Pocitos was a football stadium in the Pocitos district of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

The stadium, designed by Juan Scasso , was officially opened on November 6, 1921 and had a capacity of 15,000. The home ground of Peñarol Montevideo was inaugurated with a friendly against River Plate (final score 1: 1). Peñarol played at the Pocitos until 1933 , where he established his reputation for being able to turn games that had already been thought lost in the closing minutes with the help of fanatical fans.

During the first football World Cup in 1930 , the Estadio Pocitos served as an alternative area for the not yet fully completed Estadio Centenario . Two games of the preliminary round were played here, with the Frenchman Lucien Laurent scoring the first goal in World Cup history in the opening game against Mexico (final score 4: 1).

In 1940 the stadium was demolished.
