history

The area around the Barrios Pocitos originally developed into a seaside resort for the middle and upper classes of residents of both the Uruguayan and the Argentine coastal region of the Río de la Plata . By means of a decree from 1881, Pocitos was included in the so-called Ciudad Novísima in the course of urban development . On May 5, 1886, the village "Nuestra Señora de los Pocitos" was officially established. The Barrios Fortuna , Víctor Manuel , Caprera and Artigas located between the Arroyo Pocitos Grande and Arroyo Pocitos Chico were then included in the "Plano General del Pueblo de los Pocitos" in 1888 . Large parts of the district were developed at that time by the entrepreneur Francisco Piria , who later also built a house for his daughter with the so-called Palacio Piria Chico on the outskirts of Pocitos. On the parceled areas, summer houses of high quality were built in partly extroverted architecture or freestanding and surrounded by gardens. The main means of transport in Pocitos at that time was the tram. In the period that followed, however, the district increasingly turned into a residential area of permanent character. From the 1920s, in particular, the external appearance changed when the first changes were made to the Pocitos cadastre. The two architects Bello and Reboratti with their construction company Bello y Reborati, founded in 1921, played a key role in this . The first high-rise buildings were built in the 1930s. Benefiting from the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal , which was enacted in 1946, this process accelerated in the following years and the transformation of the original character Pocitos continues to this day.
