José Pedro Varela

José Pedro Varela (born March 19, 1845 in Montevideo , † October 24, 1879 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician , sociologist , writer and journalist .

During the reign of Lorenzo Latorre , in 1876, Varela assumed the office of Director de Instrucción Pública and presented a bill with which the state of Uruguay introduced a secular and compulsory public school system and at the same time created the necessary institutions . This project was enshrined in the law of August 24, 1877 ( Decreto Ley de Educación Común ). The entire project is also known as Valera's reform ( Reforma Vareliana ). In honor of Varela, there is a square named after him in the Montevidean district of Pocitos on Bulevar Artigas , corner of Avenida Brasil, with the Plaza Varela , on which there is a monument with his statue.
