José Pedro Varela is a city in Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the 10th section in the north of the Lavalleja department on the banks of the Arroyo Corrales . North of the city runs the border to the neighboring party Treinta y Tres . The distance to the department capital Minas is 136 kilometers, while Montevideo is approx. 256 kilometers away.

Infrastructure

Ruta 8 , which meets Ruta 14 here , runs through the city . Since two of the most important companies in this sector, Saman and Casarone, are located in José Pedro Varela, the city is also referred to as the rice-growing capital.

history

The first settlements in the urban area date back to 1870. In 1904 the development of the town called Corrales continued under the leadership of Ceferino Lenú and other residents . It was officially founded in 1912 when the merchant Bernardo Coya divided his fields into 118 building sites. By law of February 1, 1918 and the signature of the then President Feliciano Viera , the core of the settlement was given the status of a locality ("pueblo"). Furthermore, it received its current name in the course of this. This is due to José Pedro Varela . It was classified in the city category on November 19, 1967 by the Ley No. 13,631 Act.
