Treinta y Tres (German "thirty-three") is a department in Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the east of the country, on the border with Brazil , which runs through the Laguna Merín , an elongated lagoon and has an area of ​​9539 square kilometers. It is also bordered by Cerro Largo to the north, Durazno and Florida to the west, Lavalleja and Rocha to the south. In the west of the department lies the Cuchilla Grande range of hills . The east, on the other hand, is relatively flat. 20 km north of the capital is the Quebrada de los Cuervos National Park , a rocky area with many small watercourses. The Arroyo del Oro flows through the department .

history

The department was founded in 1884. The name refers to the so-called 33 Orientals under their leader Juan Antonio Lavalleja .

Residents

While 49,318 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the 2011 census was 48,134. Of these, 23,416 were men and 24,718 women. Along with Flores and Durazno , the department is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Uruguay. In 1990 the number of inhabitants per square kilometer was just under five. More than half of the department's population lives in the capital of the same name . Other larger urban settlements are Vergara , Santa Clara de Olimar , Cerro Chato and General Enrique Martínez .

Treinta y Tres has a total of seven secondary schools ( Liceos ), where 4,131 students are taught by 368 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the Liceo Nº 1 Departamental “Dr.” , established in 1913 in the department capital Treinta y Tres. Nilo Goyoaga ” . (As of December 2008)

politics

Dardo Sánchez of the Partido Nacional holds the leading position of the executive branch of the department, the office of intendente .
