Cerro Chato is a city in central Uruguay . It was here in 1927 that women took part in an election on South American soil for the first time.
geography
The city, located in the Cuchilla Grande , has the peculiarity that it is distributed over the territory of three departments . Part of the city is located in the southeastern part of Durazno in its sector 8 , while the other parts are located in the 4th sector of the Florida department and in the 6th sector of the Treinta y Tres department . The mountain of the same name is located northeast of the village . Both the Río Yí and the Arroyo Sauce have their source in the urban area , while the Arroyo Valija has its origins a few kilometers northeast . The closest larger settlement to the south to Cerro Chato is Valentines .
history
In Cerro Chato, a woman's first ever election in South America took place. The vote took place at the local referendum on July 3, 1927.
On November 17, 1964, Cerro Chato was granted the status of villa by Law No. 13.299 .

Cerro Chato has a secondary school ( Liceo ) with Liceo Nº 1 de Cerro Chato "Prof. Enrique Alzugaray", founded on April 2nd, 1945 .

Both a railway line and Ruta 7 run through the city .
Residents
Cerro Chato had 1,124 inhabitants (550 males and 574 females) in the department of Durazno, 409 (197 men and 212 women) in the department of Florida and 1,694 (815 men and 879 women) in the department of Treinta y Tres, in total at the 2011 census 3,227 inhabitants. In 2004 there were 1,099 inhabitants in the Durazno department, 518 in the Florida department and 1,661 in the Treinta y Tres department, for a total of 3,279 inhabitants.
