Durazno is a department in Uruguay . It is in the center of the country.

geography

Location and landscape

The Durazno, which covers an area of ​​11,643 km², is a region rich in water, as it is enclosed by the Río Negro and Río Yí rivers . In the Río Negro, on the northern border of the region, there are three large reservoirs that were artificially created to supply the region with energy via hydropower plants. The three large reservoirs Rincón del Bonete , Baygorria and Palmar have shaped the landscape in this area very much since their construction. Cerro Chato is the highest point in Durazno at 260 m above sea level.

Settlement structure

The capital Durazno has 34,372 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is the only larger town in the department and almost half of its inhabitants live in it. The department itself is one of the most sparsely populated regions of Uruguay , along with Flores and Treinta y Tres . In 1990 the number of inhabitants per square kilometer was just under five.

Natural resources

In Durazno there are uranium deposits at Paso de las Piedras . In Blanquillo are kaolin -Occurrence present.

education

Durazno has a total of seven secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 4,423 students are taught by 400 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the Liceo Departamental "Dr. Miguel C. Rubino" , which was founded in 1913 and is located in the department capital Durazno . (As of December 2008)

Durazno is also connected to air traffic via the Santa Bernardina airport, which is located near the capital .

Residents

While 58,859 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the context of the 2011 census was 57,088. Of these, 28,216 were men and 28,872 women.

Benjamin Irazábal of the Partido Nacional holds the leading position of the executive branch of the department, the office of intendente .
