geography

Location and landscape

The department, which covers an area of ​​10,457 km², is located in the central south of the country. While the south of the department is flat, the north and east are characterized by a hilly landscape that merges into the Cuchilla Grande in the east , the most important range of hills in the country.

Natural resources

In the department area there are deposits of black granite both in the center near Palermo and in the south-western part near Arroyo de la Virgen . Feldspar and quartz are stored at Cerro Pelado three kilometers south of the capital Florida , iron ore can be found at Valentines . The extent of the existing iron ore deposits in the department was estimated at the beginning of the 1960s at around twelve million tons.

On July 10, 1856, the department was established by law.

population

While there were still 68,636 inhabitants counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the context of the 2011 census was 67,048. Of these, 32,953 were men and 34,095 women.

The department capital Florida has 33,640 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is located in the south of the department. It is known for its annual Independence Day folklore festival.

education

Florida has a total of twelve secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 4,647 students are taught by 469 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the Liceo Departamental "Brigadier General Manuel Oribe" , which was established in the department capital Florida in 1912 . (As of December 2008)

economy

Floridasur, a free trade zone initially set up until November 12, 2041, exists near the department capital . Over 500 companies are located there on an area of ​​around 70,000 m² and there are around 110 warehouses.

politics

Carlos Enciso of the Partido Nacional holds the leading position of the executive of the department, the office of the intendente .
