geography

Location and landscape

The department, which covers an area of ​​4,992 km², is located in the southwest of the country and is bordered in the south by the Río de la Plata . The Flores department borders in the north . The local border line is formed in parts by the Arroyo San Gregorio . In the west is the department of Colonia . The Arroyo Cufré mainly serves as a natural borderline . To the east, both the northern part of the Florida department border, which is largely formed by the Arroyo del la Virgen, and the southern part of the eastern border, Canelones . The second part of the territorial separation function of this border section is taken over by the latter from the confluence of the Arroyo de la Virgen into the Río Santa Lucía . Its lower reaches also separate the areas of San Josés and Montevideos from one another. Like the rest of Uruguay, the department area, which is criss-crossed by numerous smaller rivers, is crossed by the Río San José from north to south . Natural resources

history

San José has been the scene of significant events in Uruguayan history. On June 1, 1783, first captain Eusebio Vidal founded a first settlement here with Asturian settlers. The Asamblea General Constituyente y Legislativa (Primera Asamblea General Constituyente) met for the first time on November 22, 1828 in San José as part of the Uruguayan independence process . The department is one of the areas with the greatest population density in Uruguay. While 103,104 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the 2011 census was 108,309. Of these, 53,998 were men and 54,311 women. 36,339 (2004) people live in the capital, San José de Mayo , located in the interior of the department . The second largest city was for a long time Delta del Tigre with 17,457 inhabitants (as of 2004) (not to be confused with the Argentinean town of the same name, Tigre ).
