Tigre is a city in eastern Argentina , located on the northwestern edge of the metropolitan area of the capital Buenos Aires ( Gran Buenos Aires ) on the Río Luján near its confluence with the Río de la Plata . It is the capital of the Partido de Tigre.

The name is used both for the city itself and for the entire Partido (comparable to a district). The name is based on a misunderstanding: tigers never lived in Argentina, but jaguars . These were mistaken for tigers and gave the city and delta their name. The city itself, which is located in the northeast of the Partido, has around one hundred thousand inhabitants, while the Partido Tigre has 296,189 inhabitants (2001). In addition to Tigre, the Partido mainly includes the industrial town of General Pacheco , in which the Argentinian branches of Volkswagen and Ford are based, as well as the residential suburbs of Don Torcuato and El Talar .

Tigre borders directly on the delta of the Río Paraná , which flows into the Río de la Plata about ten kilometers from the city. This fact has made Tigre a popular local recreation area for the residents of Buenos Aires. There are numerous clubs, sports facilities and restaurants on the islands of the Delta. Tigre also has a well-known market, including furniture and live animals, as well as an amusement park , the Parque de la Costa .

Several country clubs have settled on the outskirts of the city since the 1980s , some of which feature artificial lakes and hills. As a result, a large part of the Partidos, which used to be rural, is now completely built up.
