Belén de Escobar is a city in eastern Argentina , located in the metropolitan area of the capital Buenos Aires ( Gran Buenos Aires ) on a branch of the Río Paraná . The Partido Escobar , whose main town is Belén de Escobar, has 173,155 inhabitants, with about 80,000 in the city itself and the rest in the suburbs of Matheu , Ingeniero Maschwitz and Garín .

history

Belén de Escobar was mainly shaped by Asian immigrants. However, due to the rapid growth of the outskirts of the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires, the city has now assumed the character of a dormitory city. Large parts of the urban area have a poor character, there are many slums . On the other hand, many country clubs have also opened since the 1980s .

Escobar is known as the city of flowers because of the many gardens and squares in the center , and the national flower festival ( Fiesta Nacional de la Flor ) is held here every year . Weekend tourism from Buenos Aires is an important factor in other respects too , a considerable part of the popular recreational area of the delta of the Río Paraná belongs to Escobar.

In the vicinity of Escobar, the Spanish adelantado Pedro de Mendoza founded the first Buenos Aires in early 1536, probably near the bank of the Río Luján, a tributary of the Río Paraná. The expedition also included the Bavarian soldier and gunsmith Ulrich Schmidl from Straubing, whose services were recognized in the book "Utz Schmidl" by Federico B. Kirbus .

Politically, Escobar has caused a stir in Argentina since the 1990s, when the right-wing extremist Luis Patti , a well-known collaborator with the Argentine military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983, was elected to the post of mayor ( intendente ) in 1999.
