Flores is a department in Uruguay . It is located in the central west of the country.
geography
location
The department, with an area of 5144 km², is located in the part of Uruguay known as the Crystalline Plain and encompassing the northeastern part of the country. It is a varied area with mountain ranges, small hills and a sea of stones, which ensure good drainage in the area. The southern half of Flores is crossed by the Cuchilla Grande Inferior . The Arroyo Chamangá flows through the department.
climate
Flores has a temperate climate.
Natural resources
In the department area there are deposits of black granite both in the south near Pintos and in the west near Ismael Cortinas .
history
The department was formed on December 30, 1885.
population
While 25,104 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the 2011 census was 25,050. Of these, 12,342 were men and 12,708 women. Of these, 21,429 people live in the capital Trinidad alone (as of 2011; 2004: 20,982), which corresponds to a total of over 80%. The second largest city in the country is Ismael Cortinas with only 1,069 inhabitants (2004) . Other settlements are Andresito , La Casilla , Cerro Colorado and Juan José Castro . The department is the most sparsely populated in the country.
Infrastructure
education
Flores has a total of three secondary schools (Liceos) , in which 1901 pupils are taught by 177 teachers. The oldest liceo in the department is the Liceo Departamental "Carlos Brignoni Mosquera" , which was founded on April 8, 1912 and is located in the capital of the department, Trinidad (as of December 2008).
economy
Grain, flax and wine growing are just as much a branch of the economy within the department as sheep farming.
politics
Armando Castaingdebat of the Partido Nacional holds the leading position of the executive branch of the department, the office of the intendente .
