Feliciano Viera

Feliciano Alberto Viera Borges (* 1872 in Salto ; † 1927 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician from the Partido Colorado . From March 1, 1915 to March 1, 1919 he was President of the Republic of Uruguay.

Viera served as Interior Minister under President José Batlle y Ordóñez , to whom he was politically very close. During his tenure, he carried out reforms in the spirit of his predecessor, the main goal of which was to further expand the Uruguayan welfare state .

Important political events during his tenure were the break of relations with Germany during the First World War in 1917, the adoption of a new constitution in the same year that divided executive power between the President and a national administrative council, and from 1916 the complete separation of the Church and state.
